CANTON, OHIO (November 11, 2011) – Indigo Ink Press, Inc., a Canton-based nonprofit literary publisher, has announced that it will make a $500 donation to ArtsinStark’s SmArts Program this month. The SmArts program is an educational initiative designed to bring the arts into our schools to create smARTer kids. This donation is based upon sales to date of Indigo Ink’s first book, Stark ARThology, the first book dedicated to the artists of Stark County, Ohio. The project was funded in part by a Special Project grant from the County Arts Council in 2010.

The donation is being made based on sales to date for the title. To date, 500 copies have been sold, and 300 more copies have been donated throughout the community.

“We see Stark ARThology as an overwhelming success for our press, but more importantly, for the Stark County arts community and the artists who live here,” said Jessica Bennett, executive director of Indigo Ink Press. “The SmArts program is a measurable, sustainable way to ensure the future of the arts in this community. We’re proud to be able contribute to that future in this small way.”

“To date ArtsinStark has invested $200,000 and hosted 77 SmArts projects for 10,000 kids,” said ArtsinStark CEO Robb Hankins. “We are so excited about what Indigo Ink Press is doing and appreciate its contribution to the SmArts Program.”

The book is available online at IndigoInkPress.org, along with 19 local retailers and galleries and at Amazon.com. Sales of all future copies will benefit ArtsinStark’s SmArts program with $1 per copy being donated to the initiative.

###

About the Book

For the first time in one anthology come 69 of Northeast Ohio’s most talented, eclectic and diverse artists, showcased through their work, their words and provocatively austere portraiture. Included in this compelling collection are works in oil, acrylic and watercolor, in photography, pen and ink, pencil, digital design, fibers, sculpture, pottery, metal and mixed media. This title is funded in part through a $6,000 grant from ArtsinStark, The County Arts Council, and a portion of the proceeds from the publication will benefit ArtsinStark’s SmArts Program, an educational initiative designed to bring the arts into our schools to create smARTer kids.

Paper Covers Rock is a collection of poems, largely in first-person persona, that explores coming-of-age as perpetual transition—birth, death, love, loss, sex, illness, and transcendence.

Inspired by William Blake’s line, “To see the world in a grain of sand” (Auguries of Innocence), many of the poems suggest that we can find vast truth in small events, life continually unfolding its mystery in everyday happenings. Primarily narrative, the poetry is lean, direct and grounded in fresh images.

Read more about Chella Courington & sample a poem

Kristen McHenry on her flip edition companion: “The poetry in Paper Covers Rock is many things—among them, elegant, efficient, and intelligently crafted. But what is most impressive is the wide range of voices they embody; from wise and incisive, to fiery and rebellious, to wildly sensual and imaginative. Chella writes with a deceptively light touch; over and over poems that seem spare and airy stick the landing with a solid punch to the gut.”

While Triplicity: Poems in Threes didn’t start out as a collection of triplets, these utterly disarming poems fit quite snuggly into themed triads.

At once ethereal and cryptic, McHenry writes eloquently about everything – from pigs to prophets, from Vegas to victims, and the dangers of falling love with a Vulcan – and does so with the experience of a woman navigating her female-ness.

Read more about Kristen McHenry & sample a poem

Chella Courington on her flip edition companion: “Disturbing and lovely, Kristen’s poetry transports you to places where life and death, love and loss are at stake. The poems move through tough terrain embodying the voices of those often denied and forgotten: from prostitutes to the homeless, from slaughtered pigs to victimized girls. While her writing challenges the reader to look at life’s underbelly without turning away, you are given beautiful language that always rejects denial.”

Ahh, the sweet smell of success. I’ve been like the proverbial kid on Christmas Eve, breathless with anticipation, awaiting the release of “Stark Arthology.” The book is the inaugural publication from Canton’s non-profit publisher, Indigo Ink Press, and the first-ever anthology of Stark County artists - 69 of them to be exact. It’s due to hit many local stores on Saturday, November 20. So imagine my delight when Jessica Bennett – founder and executive director of Indigo Ink Press, and who also designed and edited the book – advanced me a copy hot off the presses (and oh yes, that smell!) with an invitation to review it. Yes, June Godwit, there is a Santa Claus.
